Side Door Law was founded by a lawyer and former immigration consultant who came to the bar through science and education. The practice exists because of what that vantage point makes visible: exceptional people shut out of a system that should serve them.
Built from the inside of the problem
Side Door Law was founded on a simple conviction: the gap between people who need legal help and people who can access it is not inevitable. It is a design flaw. And design flaws can be fixed.
The founding lawyer came to the bar through a science degree, a career in education, and years of work as an immigration consultant. Each of those roles offered a direct view of the same problem: people facing complex legal systems without a guide, and a legal profession that was not designed with them in mind.
The practice spans eight areas of law, including immigration, family, intellectual property, employment, wills and estates, tenancy, and general legal help, with family law and immigration at its core. Services are unbundled and flat-fee so that clients pay only for what they need.
The clinic runs on a cross-subsidy model. Corporate and startup clients pay market rates. That revenue funds sliding-scale and pro bono services for individuals who need them most. This is not charity. It is a sustainable architecture for access to justice.
Side Door Law is also a home for internationally trained lawyers, NCA candidates, and law students who believe that legal work should be meaningful. If you want your pro bono work to count toward something real, or you need a foot in the door of Canadian practice, there is a place here for you.
